A glass balustrade is a stylish and modern safety barrier, providing strength and safety with unobstructed views. At Wellington Glass & Mirror, we offer a full range of glass balustrade options, from framed to semi frameless and fully frameless systems to suit your design, specification and budget.

Glass balustrades are ideal for decks, wind breaks, pool fences, and both internal and external balconies, stairs and landings. The glass can be clear for unobstructed views, or tinted or opaque offering varying degrees of privacy. Fittings come in either stainless steel, anodised aluminium or powder-coated aluminium in any colour in the Dulux powder coating range.

We take no shortcuts when it comes to safety. All our custom balustrades use either toughened Grade-A safety glass or toughened Laminated Safety Glass (LSG) with a non-structural (EVA) or structural (SentryGlas®) interlayer, and are fully compliant with the stringent requirements set out in the NZ Building Code. We can also work with you or your architect on specific engineered designs if proprietary systems are not available or to your requirement.

Choosing the best glass balustrade for your home

There are many options available, and the most suitable for a particular location depends on building structure and use, wind zone, installation logistics and budget.

Systems with less visual framing typically require stronger glass and are therefore more expensive. Panel width also depends on wind zone, fixing and glass type. A selection of options is show below.

Other options for glass balustrades include three or four-sided support, eg timber posts and rails, using either monolithic

(10-15mm toughened safety glass), EVA Laminated Safety Glass, or SentryGlas®.

From a cost perspective, the general rule is ‘the less you see, the higher the cost’. Fully frameless balustrades cost more than semi-frameless or framed options due to the requirement for thicker toughened or laminated safety glass and additional fixings.
